Flames Claim Series Over Golden Bears

UIC splits doubleheader with Cal with a 6-1 victory in the rubber game Saturday night

BEREKELY, Calif. – The UIC baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with California to earn its first series win of the year. After dropping game one of the doubleheader, UIC rebounded to pick up the 6-1 win in the nightcap to take down the Pac-12 foe.

Game One Recap

Cal jumped out to the early lead in Game 1 of the doubleheader, scoring a run in the first and four more in the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Flames got on the scoreboard in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-1. Joshua Figueroa and Ryan Lin-Peistrup walked to put two runners on. With two away, Breck Nowik delivered an RBI single up the middle to plate Figueroa and put the Flames on the scoreboard.

Cal answered with a run in the home half of the fourth and added three in the sixth and one in the seventh.

UIC added a run in the eighth to add the second run to the Flames' total. Garrett McCarthy singled to lead off the inning before Bryan Rosario doubled to put runners on second and third. Sean Dee drove McCarthy home on an RBI groundout to make it 10-2 in favor of Cal.

The Golden Bears added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to cap the 12-2 final.

Game Two Recap

Things turned around for the Flames in the nightcap of the doubleheader, as UIC pounded out 10 hits en route to the 6-1 victory.

UIC jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to sacrifice flies by Figueroa and Cory Moore in the first and second innings, respectively. The lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth after McCarthy delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Ryan Nagelbach.

Cal scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth before a big 3-run eighth by UIC put the game out of reach. The Flames loaded the bases with one away before a throwing error by the Golden Bears scored a pair of runs. UIC tacked on a third run when McCarthy scored due to interference.

Matt Zahora shined in relief, throwing the final five innings of the game to earn the win. Zahora allowed just one hit and a walk over his outing while striking out a pair to earn his first collegiate win on the mound.

The Flames are back in action on Friday, March 4, taking on Ohio in a weekend trip to Evansville.
