EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The UIC baseball team was back in action on Friday, taking on Ohio and Evansville in a pair of games. The Flames were unable to carry the momentum from last weekend's series win over Cal, falling to the Bobcats, 5-1, before dropping a 4-2 decision to the Purple Aces.
Game One Recap
Â
The Flames struck first with a run in the bottom of the second.
Ryan Nagelbach doubled to lead off the inning before
Breck Nowik was hit by a pitch. With two down and runners on the corners,
Cory Moore delivered an RBI single to right to give the Flames the early 1-0 lead.
Â
UIC's advantage wouldn't last long, as the Bobcats evened the score at 1-all in the top of the third.
Â
The Flames would get a runner in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunity in an attempt to regain the lead.
Â
Ohio pulled away with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh, pushing the advantage to the 5-1 final.
Â
Nagelbach and
Bobby Grimes led the way with two hits each for the Flames, while
Tyler Ingram struck out seven batters over six innings of work in the losing effort.

Game Two Recap
Â
For the second time Friday, the Flames jumped out to the early lead with a run in the first.
Bryan Rosario led off the game with a ground-rule double and was moved to third on
Rayth Petersen's sacrifice bunt. UIC completed the manufactured run when
Cole Conn lifted a sac fly to left, putting UIC ahead by a 1-0 margin.
Â
Back-to-back doubles, paired with a sac fly, by Evansville in the bottom of the second but the hosts in front by a 2-1 margin they would not relinquish. The Purple Aces tacked on a run in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-1.
Â
UIC pulled within one in the top of the seventh after Moore tripled down the left field line and came home on the Grimes sac fly. Evansville immediately countered with a run in the home half of the seventh.
Â
The Flames looked to make a late rally in the ninth after the first two runners reached base. Moore led off the inning with a single and Grimes walked, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with nobody out. But three consecutive strikeouts would end the UIC threat and close out the 4-2 decision in favor of the Purple Aces.
Â
UIC will look to salvage the weekend on Saturday when the Flames take on Evansville in a rematch. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
