Sara Sternard Named to All-Horizon League Team|

INDIANAPOLIS – UIC’s Sara Sternard (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) was named to the 2013 All-Horizon League Team, as announced by the league office Monday (Nov. 18). This is Sternard’s second yearly honor from the League as she was selected to the All-Newcomer Team following the 2011 season.
“Sara is a well-rounded student-athlete who always works her hardest no matter the task,” said UIC head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley. “She comes to practice every day to get better and also to raise the team’s level of play. I am happy for Sara and excited to see what she can do next season.”
Sternard played in 109 sets over 30 appearances and led the squad with 329 kills and 80 total blocks. She recorded double-digit kills on 18 occasions and five-plus blocks three times.
Sternard finished the season ranked fourth in the Horizon League with a .293 attack percentage and seventh with 3.02 kills per set. During League play, Sternard ranked fifth in the conference with 3.20 kills per set.
Sternard posted a career-high 19 kills against Loyola Chicago (Nov. 6) and Wright State (Nov. 16). She had 15-plus kills on six occasions, including the season-opening win over Elon (Aug. 30).
Sternard also posted over a .400 attack percentage nine times, including a season-high .562 clip against Binghamton (9k-0e-16ta). She will enter her senior season with 763 career kills and 249 total blocks.
Sternard was named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 14 after 28 kills on 61 attempts for an impressive .393 attack percentage in road matches against Cleveland State (Oct. 11) and Youngstown State (Oct. 12). She was also selected to two all-tournament teams early in the season. Sternard had 38 kills (.365 attack percentage) at Navy’s Kristen Dickmann Invitational (Aug. 30-31) and 27 kills at Iowa’s Hawkeye Challenge (Sept. 13-14).
The Horizon League Volleyball Championship begins on Friday, Nov. 22 at Klotsche Center in Milwaukee, Wis. The quarterfinals start with No. 5 Youngstown State facing No. 4 Green Bay at 5:30 (ET) and No. 6 Cleveland State playing No. 3 Oakland at 8:00 p.m. (ET). No. 1 Milwaukee will square off against the lowest remaining seed while No. 2 Valparaiso will meet the highest remaining team in the semifinals, which begin at 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 23. The championship contest begins at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 24.
