    Tournament Notes Get Acrobat Reader

    CHICAGO –The second-seeded UIC volleyball team (18-12/10-4 Horizon League) begins competition in the semifinal round of the Horizon League Championship Saturday at 5:30 p.m. (CT) against No. 3 Valparaiso inside the Woodling Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.

    SCOUTING THE FLAMES:UIC (18-12/10-4 Horizon League) … Janise Dismuke leads the team offensively with a hitting percentage of .336 – the second-highest in the Horizon League … Kelsey Safranek has collected 355 kills in 113 sets, while Aubrey Sniegowski has 325 … Maggie Strus has earned 555 digs on the season – the most single-season digs in program history … MaryKate Imrie has handed out 1,260 helpers on the season – the most in the Horizon League at 11.05 per set.

    UIC AND VALPARAISO IN 2012:The Flames and Crusaders have split decisions during the 2012 season … UIC first met Valparaiso inside the Flames Athletic Center on Sept. 21 … the Flames dropped the Crusaders, 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 26-24, 26-24) … Safranek and Molly McCoy piloted the Flames with 17 kills apiece … Sara Sternard added 11 more kills in the victory … UIC traveled to Valparaiso on Oct. 20, where the Crusaders defeated the Flames, 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22) … Imrie and Safranek had double-double performances with 51 assists and 11 digs and 11 digs and 14 digs, respectively.

    UIC IN THE HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:Since UIC volleyball joined the Horizon League during the 2001 season, the Flames have competed in the tournament each season … in those 11 seasons, the Flames have advanced past the quarterfinal round during the 2006 and 2009 seasons … in 2006, UIC dropped Butler (3-0) in the quarterfinals and Cleveland State (3-2) in the semifinals to advance to the championship match, but fell to Milwaukee, 3-0 … during the 2009 campaign, the Flames defeated Butler 3-1 in the quarterfinals, before falling 3-1 to Cleveland State in the semifinal round … the 2012 season marks the first time UIC has received a bye in to the tournament.

    POST-SEASON ACCOLADES:Dismuke, Sniegowski and Imrie were named to the all-Horizon League team … in 113 sets of play during the 2012 regular season, Dismuke collected a .336 hitting percentage – the highest on the team - with 289 kills (2.56 per set) and 119 total blocks … she ranks second in the Horizon League with the .336 clip … fifth overall in blocks at 1.05 per set, and holds three of the top-10 hitting percentage numbers in the League, include the top two … atop the list is .812 from a 3-0 victory over Eastern Illinois on Oct. 3, followed by .762 from a win over Wright State on Sept. 22 … Sniegowski has compiled a .267 hitting percentage with 325 kills and 75 total blocks during 114 sets of competition on the 2012 season … in Horizon League matches, she is hitting at .279 and has captured 168 kills (3.05 per set) … she collected career-high numbers Oct. 6 against Milwaukee. In the victory over the Panthers, Sniegowski captured 19 kills and seven block assists … Imrie leads the Horizon League in assists with 114 (11.05 per set), and holds the most assists in a single match with 61 (versus Milwaukee on Oct. 6) … holds the second-most double-double performances with 17, just one behind Milwaukee’s Julie Kolinske, who has 18. She captured four consecutive double-double performances from Oct. 26 through Nov. 3.

    PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:Dismuke was awarded as the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 9 following the .812 clip and posting .400 and .467 hitting percentages over Green Bay and Milwaukee, respectively … she managed to hit at .400-or higher for five consecutive matches (Oct. 3-19) … sophomore middle hitter Sara Sternard was selected as the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week for the period of Nov. 5-11 … she bested her career-high .600 hitting percentage set against Green Bay on Sept. 24, 2011 with a .684 performance Saturday (Nov. 10) as UIC defeated Loyola, 3-2 to secure the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Championship … collected 13 kills on 19 attempts without a single error … defensively, she recorded career-highs in block assists and total blocks with eight. Her previous bests were five blocks assists (at Green Bay on 9/24/11) and six total blocks at Youngstown State on Nov. 5, 2011.

    DOUBLE TROUBLE:Imrie has collected the second-most double-double performances in the Horizon League with 17 … she had four consecutive double-double performances from Oct. 26 through Nov. 3.

    LAST TIME OUT:The Flames defeated Loyola Saturday (Nov. 10) inside the Flames Athletic Center … the Flames rallied back and downed the Ramblers 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-27, 26-24, 15-18) … Sternard hit at .684 – a career-high – to lead the Flames … Safranek had a double-double, including 13 kills and 14 digs … Nicole Allgood had 12 kills and seven digs … Strus and Justine Garcia had 19 and 17 digs, respectively.
