Sara Sternard Earns Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week|

INDIANAPOLIS – Junior middle hitter Sara Sternard (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) has been named the Horizon League's "Offensive Player of the Week" for the period of Oct. 7-13, it was announced by the conference office Monday morning. This is the first such honor for UIC this season and Sternard’s third career Player of the Week award (Sept. 26, 2011 & Nov. 12, 2012).
Sternard put down 28 kills on 61 attempts for an impressive .393 attack percentage in road matches against Cleveland State (Oct. 11) and Youngstown State (Oct. 12). Over the last eight matches, Sternard is hitting at a stellar .408 clip (93 kills on 196 attempts). She currently ranks third in the Horizon League with a .321 attack percentage and tenth with 2.89 kills per set.
Sternard helped the Flames pick up their first league win of the season over Cleveland State Friday night. UIC trailed 2-0 but won the final three sets while Sternard put down five kills in the third set win and four in the fifth set victory. Overall, she tallied 13 kills on 31 attempts with only one error (.387 attack percentage) in the comeback win over the Vikings.
Sternard only needed 30 attempts to put down 15 kills for a .400 attack percentage against Youngstown State Saturday. She had seven kills on 11 attempts in the first set. Her performance is the best three-set effort in Horizon League play this season. During conference play, Sternard ranks third in kills per set (3.39) and fifth in attack percentage (.374).
UIC (6-14, 1-4 Horizon League) concludes the first half of Horizon League play next weekend (Oct. 18-19) when the Flames play host to Wright State and Oakland. UIC takes on Wright State (6-16, 0-5 Horizon League) at 7 p.m. Friday and Oakland (8-11, 2-3 Horizon League) at 4 p.m. Saturday inside the Flames Athletic Center.
