CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team (6-8/0-0 Horizon League) opens conference play Friday at 7:00 p.m. (CT) against Valparaiso (8-6/0-0 Horizon League) inside the Flames Athletic Center, followed by Wright State (2-15/0-0 Horizon League) Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES UIC (6-8/0-0 Horizon League) ... Kelsey Safranek has 154 kills on the season, while Aubrey Sniegowski trails at 145 (.253) ... MaryKatie Imrie has dished out 528 assists ... Maggie Strus has collected 246 digs ... Janise Dismuke leads the team in blocks with 52.
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS Valparaiso (8-6/0-0 Horizon League) ... the Crusaders are currently on a three-match winning streak, having defeated Indiana (3-2), Miami (Ohio) (3-0) and UT-Chattanooga (3-0) ... the team is led offensively by Kelsey Victor with 113 kills (.161) ... defensively, Taylor Root leads the team with 249 digs, followed by Sarah Dooms with 178 ... Kelsey Berrington leads the team in sets with 289.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS Wright State (2-15/0-0 Horizon League) ... the Raiders have lost seven of their last eight matches ... most recently, the team fell to Wyoming (0-3), Ball State (0-3) and Pittsburgh (0-3) in the Ball State Invitational ... the team won their last game against Chicago State (3-1) ... Marisa Aiello and Heidi Splinter lead the team in kills with 179 and 127, in the order ... Ashleigh Lucco has handed out 499 assists ... Katie Glassmeyer leads the team in digs with 235, followed by Splinter and Natalie Catani, respectively.

MaryKate Imrie: GIVING IS RECEIVING Junior setter MaryKate Imrie was selected as the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Sept. 10-16 ... the accolade came on the coattails of being selected to the Tiger Invitational all-tournament team ... Imrie posted 10.1 assists per set average over the four matches to lead her team to a 2-2 record ... in the opening round against the host Tigers, UIC won the second and third sets before falling in the fifth as Imrie tallied 45 assists ... the Orland Park, Ill., native shined in the second match versus Alabama A&M, outperforming the Bulldogs single-handedly in assists, 53-36 ... she then posted 54 helpers in the tournament's third match against Louisiana-Lafayette, a decision the Flames won 3-2 ... the junior added an additional 30 assists in the event finale in a 3-1 loss to Belmont, bringing her four-match total to 182 assists ... Imrie ranks fifth in the Horizon League with a 10.0 assists per set average and serves as the conference's SAAC Vice President along with her role as UIC SAAC President.
DISMUKE; DOIN' WORK Senior Janise Dismuke was selected as the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Sept. 3-9 ... the honor came after being selected to the Chicago Classic all-tournament team ... Dismuke had 29 kills and 12 blocks in the four matches as she helped guide the Flames to a 2-2 record during the week ... UIC defeated Northern Illinois, 3-1 (26-24, 25-13, 20-25, 25-20) and DePaul 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 26-24) ... UIC's two losses came in competitive matches against the Beavers, 3-0 (22-25, 19-25, 25-27) and the second-ranked Nittany Lions, 3-0 (17-25, 18-25, 17-25) ... the Flames led Penn State nearly mid-way through each of the first two sets, causing seven lead changes and 11 ties throughout the match.
LAST TIME OUT The team most recently completed competition at the Tiger Invitational (Sept. 14-15) in Memphis, Tenn. ... the Flames recorded a 2-2 record in the event ... UIC split decisions both days of the event ... the Flames fell in the opener to Memphis, 3-2 ... the team bounced back with a 3-1 win over Alabama A&M ... the Flames downed Louisiana-Lafayette 3-2 ... UIC was then defeated by Belmont, 3-1.
UP NEXT The team travels to Ohio, Sept. 28-29 to face conference rivals in Youngstown State and Cleveland State ... the Flames face the Penguins Friday at 6:00 p.m. (CT), followed by the Vikings Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
