Volleyball Earns No. 8 Ranking In First Regional Poll
Sept. 20, 2000
Chicago, Ill. - The effects of the UIC volleyball team's best-ever start to a season showed this morning in the first regional rankings as the Flames were slotted at No. 8 in the Midwest Region.
With Loyola (5th), UW-Milwaukee (7th) and Butler (9th) also regionally ranked, the initial poll showed off the continued success of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. It also means the Flames, who are 9-2 on the year, have a tough road ahead of them as they face each of those schools twice in the next two months, along with an Oct. 24 meeting with city rival DePaul, who is ranked No. 3 in the region.
Houston (6-3) is on top in the poll, followed by Conference USA mates Louisville (6-3), DePaul (9-3), and Cincinnati (7-4). The MCC dominates the poll from there with South Florida (6th) and Eastern Illinois (10th) rounding out the poll.
UIC also showed up in the first batch of NCAA national statistics released today with senior middle hitter Jill Greer sitting at No. 11 in the country in blocks, averaging 1.60 bpg. The Flames were also ranked No. 14 as a team in digs per game with a 19.07 dpg average.
