UIC Volleyball Gives Back To The Community
Sept. 19, 2007
Volleyball Community Service Photo Gallery Chicago, Ill. The UIC volleyball team took a break from the court on Sept. 16 to volunteer its time to the Chicago Park District's First Annual Mini-Triathlon at Independence Park. The event included a 100-yard swim, 4K bike and 1.5K run for children, teens and adults with developmental disabilities. "Working with Special Olympic athletes is always inspiring to myself and my athletes," said head coach Nancy Mueller. "I really think it makes us realize how fortunate we are in this world. I was really impressed by the team's ability to jump in and help out all the athletes, and I know the athletes really appreciated it. It's amazing how something as simple as a high-five can make someone smile. It's very rewarding." Mueller and the coaching staff are always looking for ways for the team to give back to the community because of the support the community has given to the UIC volleyball program. "I wanted our players to realize how fortunate they are, but more importantly how important it is to reach out to help others," said Mueller. "I was very proud of how our UIC Volleyball family was able to welcome the Special Olympics Triathlon athletes with open arms and encourage them to do their best at all times."
