Volleyball Travels To The Graceland

CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team (4-6/0-0 Horizon) travels to Memphis, Tenn., for the Tiger Invitational. The team opens competition against host team, Memphis, Friday at Noon (CT), followed by Alabama A&M at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, the UIC faces Louisiana Lafayette and Belmont at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES: UIC (4-6/0-0 Horizon League) is led by senior Aubrey Sniegowski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) ... Sniegowski has 107 kills on the season at a .293 hitting percentage ... she is also the second leader in blocks with 21 ... senior Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) has 41 blocks on the season, including eight solo blocks ... junior setter MaryKate Imrie (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) has 346 assists (9.89/set) ... redshirt sophomore Maggie Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) has 149 digs, while junior Justine Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Brooks) has 110.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Memphis (2-8/0-0 Conference USA) is led by Altrese Hawkins with 155 kills (.222) ... Jaden Louie has handed out 232 assists on the season ... Lauren Hawkins and Katie Meyer both have 27 blocks ... the Tigers defeated North Florida (3-0) and Florida Golf Coast (3-0) ... the team has suffered losses to Austin Peay (3-2), Southern Illinois, Arkansas-Little Rock, Eastern Michigan, Arkansas State, College of Charleston (3-1), Toledo (3-1) and Illinois State ... the Tigers were swept each of their losses except three this campaign.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: Alabama A&M (1-11/0-0 SWAC) earned its first win of the season over Alabama-Huntsville, 3-0 ... Clairissa Moore leads the Bulldogs in kills with 136 (.229) ... Ashley Forman has dished out 288 assists ... Ashley Forman and Rebecca Cortez have 90 and 89 digs, respectively ... 10 of Alabama A&M's losses have been sweeps, while the team fell to Tennessee at Chattanooga, 3-1.
SCOUTING THE BRUINS: Belmont (3-7/0-0 Atlantic Sun) is led in kills by Scarlett Gable with 80 (.141) ... Hannah Miranda has 254 assists (9.41) ... Jamie Lundstrom leads the team defensively with 159 digs ... the team began the season with a 3-0 win over Alabama A&M ... the Bruins then went on a seven-match losing streak ... Belmont has won its last two matches ... the Bruins defeated Niagra (3-0) and Evansville, 3-2.
SCOUTING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS: Louisiana-Lafayette (5-6/0-0 Sun Belt) are led by Lavinia Tataran and Blair Claypoole with 101 (2.59) and 96 (2.46) kills, in that order ... Mandi Gavin has 363 assists on the season ... Caitlyn Auxilien has 168 digs for the Ragin' Cajuns ... Louisiana-Lafayette found a three-match winning streak as the team defeated Houston Baptist (3-1), McNeese State (3-0) and Southern Miss (3-0).
DISMUKE: UICFLAMES.COM STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Janise Dismuke notched all-Chicago Classic honors ... she totaled 29 kills and 12 blocks in four matches during the week ... Dismuke paced the Flames to a 3-1 (26-24, 25-13, 20-25, 25-20) win over Northern Illinois ... and a sweep (25-22, 25-16, 26-24) over DePaul ... UIC's two losses came in competitive matches against the Beavers (22-25, 19-25, 25-27) and the second-ranked Nittany Lions (17-25, 18-25, 17-25) ... the Flames led Penn State nearly mid-way through each of the first two sets, causing seven lead changes and 11 ties throughout the match.
LAST TIME OUT: UIC competed in the Chicago Classic Sept. 8-9 ... the Flames opened competition against Oregon State and fell 3-0 (22-25, 19-25, 25-27) ... UIC then defeated DePaul (25-22, 25-16, 26-24) ... the final match of the tournament was against Penn State and UIC dropped 3-0 (17-25, 18-25, 17-25) to the Nittany Lions.
Josh Wielebnicki JOINS STAFF: Wielebnicki joins the UIC staff after serving as an assistant coach at Evansville for two seasons ... while with the Purple Aces', he worked primarily with outside hitters, opposite hitters and defensive specialists ... prior to Evansville, he was the top assistant at Western Carolina for one season ... a 2008 graduate of Illinois State ... he was a student manager and student assistant for the Redbirds ... he also handled vice president and captain duties while playing on the men's volleyball team ... Wielebnicki played volleyball for Lewis from 2004-06 ... a native of Hinsdale, Ill., he attended Hinsdale South.
STAND-OUT SAFRANEK: Safranek notched her fourth Horizon League accolade as she was named to the preseason team ... as a freshman, she was selected to the all-Newcomer Team ... during her sophomore and junior seasons she earned all-Horizon League honors ... she was also named the Horizon League "Offensive Player of the Week" on Sept. 12, 2011 ... during her junior season, Safranek had 466 kills (4.40/set) ... she set a career-high 33 kills on Nov. 11, 2011 against Youngstown State ... she has 24 kills through the first weekend of play during this season.
PRESEASON POLL: UIC was selected fourth in the preseason Horizon League poll with 29 points ... Milwaukee earned the first-place spot (49 points) ... Cleveland State was selected second with 43 points ... Valparaiso claimed third place (36 points) ... Green Bay and Loyola were selected for fifth (26 points) and sixth place (21 points), respectively ... Wright State in seventh place (11 points) and Youngstown State in eighth place (nine points) rounded out the preseason poll.
UP NEXT: UIC opens Horizon League play Sept. 21 and 22 ... the Flames welcome Valparaiso to the Flames Athletic Center Friday ... followed by Wright State Saturday.
