`Forty Flames to Follow' in 2013-14: Maggie Strus

CHICAGO – Redshirt junior libero Maggie Strus concluded the 2012 season with 600 digs, the most in UIC volleyball program history, along with the most single-match digs at 35. Strus is a leader both on and off the court and is Thursday’s featured student-athlete in the “Forty Flames to Follow” in 2013-14 summer series.
Strus appeared in all123 sets during the 2012 season, where she served as the top defensive player with 600 digs on the season at 4.88 per set. She collected 35 digs against Belmont on Sept. 15, which marks the most digs earned in a single match in program history. She collected 13 20-plus dig feats and two 30-plus performances.
Strus led the Flames to the championship match of the Horizon League tournament. During the three post-season matches, she earned 64 digs and was named to the Horizon League all-tournament team.
During her rookie season with the Flames, Strus earned the UIC “Unity, Integrity, Commitment” Award, which depicts the three core values of the UIC volleyball program. She appeared in all 106 sets, where she began the season as a hitter before transitioning to a defensive specialist.
The UIC volleyball team begins its 2013 campaign August 30 against Elon in a tournament at Navy.
