Volleyball Releases 2003 Schedule|
June 17, 2003
Chicago, Ill. - University of Illinois at Chicago Head Volleyball Coach Don August announced his squad's schedule for the upcoming 2003 campaign on Tuesday morning.
The Flames will be put to the test early, as they will open the first four weeks with non-conference tournaments at Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and Clemson, along with hosting the UIC Invitational.
"The non-conference schedule is tougher than it has been in recent years," August said. "We need a consistent challenge on the floor so we can be focused and ready for every match, so that we can play at a high level."
UIC opens the season on Friday, August 29th, as they will take on IPFW in the opening match of Central Michigan's Chippewa Classic. The Flames will round out the tournament on Saturday, with matches against Horizon League rival, UW-Green Bay, and the host Chippewas.
The Flames open their home slate on Friday, September 5th, with the UIC Invitational that features 2002 Horizon League regular-season champion, Loyola, along with Northwestern, a 2002 NCAA participant, and Mississippi.
UIC travels to DeKalb, Ill., the following weekend to take part in the Northern Illinois Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational on Friday, September 12th. The Flames will square off with the host Huskies, along with Valparaiso and Stony Brook.
The Flames wrap up their tournament slate on September 19th, as they will participate in the Clemson Invitational, which features the host Tigers, as well as Charleston Southern and East Tennessee State.
August has also scheduled IUPUI along with in-state rivals, Bradley, Chicago State and Eastern Illinois to round out the Flames' non-conference slate helping prepare the Flames for the upcoming Horizon League campaign.
"Going into (Horizon League play), we have to make sure that we are ready to step up our game," August said. "Every conference game is going to be so critical this year.
"Every year, I think the league gets closer and closer," August continued. "I'd be surprised if one team ran away with it, like Loyola and UW-Milwaukee seemed to have done the last couple of years."
UIC opens its Horizon League campaign on September 26th, as they will host Wright State at 7:00 in the Flames Athletic Center.
The Flames return four starters to the court this season, including All-Horizon League performer Teaha Shepperd and Horizon League Co-Newcomer of the Year, Meghan Keck. Rounding out the cast for UIC is senior outside hitter Lindsey Filkins and junior middle hitter Kristi Herrington.
