Schumacher-Cawley Announces Volleyball's 2014 Schedule
May 27, 2014
CHICAGO - UIC head volleyball coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley announced the 2014 schedule Tuesday, a slate that features 12 home matches and the annual UIC Invitational in mid-September. The Flames will also make non-conference tournament trips to Marshall and defending-national champions Penn State prior to the beginning of Horizon League play.
"I am looking forward to the 2014 season. Our non-conference schedule is filled with opponents that will force our team to play at a consistently high level," said head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley. "All four tournaments will prepare us for the Horizon League, which continues to raise the level of play every year.”
The Flames begin the season in Huntington, W. Va. on the weekend of August 29-30 in a tournament hosted by Marshall University. UIC will take on the host Thundering Herd, Eastern Michigan and Virginia in the two-day Thunder Invitational.
UIC returns home the next weekend (Sept. 5-6) to play in a tournament hosted by Chicago State. The Flames will make the 12-mile trip down I-94 to play the host Cougars, Syracuse and DePaul.
Three days later (Sept. 9), UIC will make the two-hour trip south to play at Illinois State. UIC and ISU have met ten times, most recently at the 2008 Chicago Classic. The Flames and Redbirds have played in Normal on four occasions and ISU has won all four matchups.
UIC will host the UIC Invitational on the second weekend of September. During the ensuing two days (Sept. 12-13), the Flames will entertain Indiana, Eastern Kentucky, Buffalo and Western Illinois at the Flames Athletic Center.
The Flames make the short trip to DeKalb on Sept. 16 to take on Northern Illinois. UIC and NIU have met 36 times, most recently in 2012 when the Flames defeated the Huskies over four sets in Chicago. NIU won the last matchup in DeKalb (Sept. 16, 2011) over three sets.
The fourth weekend of the season (Sept. 19-20) will see the Flames make the trip to Pennsylvania to compete in Penn State’s Alumni Classic. Penn State head coach Russ Rose will welcome Schumacher-Cawley and three other Penn State alumni to campus for the tournament. The other head coaches participating include Nadia Edwards (DePaul), Kate Price (Eastern Illinois) and Julie Torbett (Eastern Carolina).
UIC will take its final break from Horizon League play on November 14 when the Flames play host to Loyola Chicago. The Flames and Ramblers have played 65 times, including a 3-1 Loyola win last season (Nov. 6, 2013). UIC defeated Loyola in five sets the last time the programs played in the Flames Athletic Center (Nov. 10, 2012).
Horizon League Play
Horizon League play begins on the last weekend of September as UIC plays at Milwaukee (Sept. 26) and Green Bay (Sept. 27). Other conference road trips include Wright State (Oct. 10), Oakland (Oct. 11), Valparaiso (Oct. 17), Youngstown State (Oct. 31) and Cleveland State (Nov. 1).
UIC’s Horizon League home opener is set for October 3 against Cleveland State. Other conference contests at the Flames Athletic Center include Youngstown State (Oct. 4), Green Bay (Oct. 24), Milwaukee (Oct. 25), Oakland (Nov. 7), Wright State (Nov. 8) and Valparaiso (Nov. 15).
