2013 UIC Volleyball Schedule

CHICAGO- The 2013 UIC Volleyball schedule was released Friday, a slate that features 11 home matches, including the annual UIC Invitational in early September. The Flames will also make non-conference tournament trips to Navy, Iowa and Kent State prior to the beginning of Horizon League play.

"I am looking forward to the 2013 season. Our preseason schedule is filled with opponents that will force our team to play at a consistently high level," said head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley. "All four preseason tournaments will prepare us for the Horizon League, which continues to raise the level of play every year - we must be prepared for every match to be a battle.

"I am also excited for our seniors, MaryKate Imrie and Justine Garcia, to give their best and final run toward a conference championship."

The Flames will begin the season in a tournament hosted by the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., the weekend of August 30-31. UIC will take on Elon, host Navy and UNC-Wilmington in the two-day tourney.

On Thursday, September 5, the Flames will host TCU at the Flames Athletic Center in the home opener. During the ensuing two days (Friday, Sept. 6-Saturday, Sept. 7), UIC will entertain Marshall, Chicago State and Denver in the annual UIC Invitational.

The third weekend of the season will see the Flames make the trip to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Hawkeye Challenge. UIC will take on Western Illinois and Drake on Friday Sept. 13, followed by a doubleheader against Ball State and host Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 14.

The following weekend (Sept. 20-21), UIC will travel to northeast Ohio to participate in the Golden Flashes Classic, hosted by Kent State University. The Flames will face Eastern Illinois (Sept. 20), Binghamton (Sept. 21) and host Kent State (Sept. 21) to wrap up preseason action.

UIC will host three-straight matches to kick-off Horizon League play, beginning with a match against Valparaiso at the FAC on Saturday, Sept. 28. The following weekend (Oct. 4-5), the Flames will entertain Milwaukee and Green Bay in the first two-match series of League play.

UIC will return to northeast Ohio the weekend of Oct. 11-12, when the Flames take on Cleveland State and Youngstown State, respectively. UIC will return home the following weekend to host Wright State (Oct. 18) and Oakland (Oct. 19), the Horizon League's newest member.

UIC will begin a four-match road swing on Saturday, Oct. 26, when the Flames pay the return trip to Valpo. UIC will also take on Green Bay (Nov. 1) and Milwaukee (Nov. 2) the following weekend, and face Loyola in a non-conference match in Rogers Park on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

UIC's final homestand will take place the weekend of Nov. 8-9, when Youngstown State and Cleveland State visit the FAC. The Flames will wrap up regular season Horizon League play by traveling to Oakland and Wright State, respectively, Nov. 15 and Nov. 16.

The 2013 Horizon League Championship will be held from Nov. 22-24, with the regular season champion hosting the event.

The Flames finished second in both the Horizon League regular season and postseason tournament in 2012. UIC is set to return eight letterwinners from last season, including Imrie, an All-Horizon League setter, and junior libero Maggie Strus, who was named to the All-Tournament Team last fall. Schumacher-Cawley and her staff also signed four incoming freshmen last November.
