CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team played host to seven schools for a spring tournament Saturday (April 12) inside the Flames Athletic Center. The Flames competed against Lewis, Northern Illinois, Kishwaukee College and Eastern Illinois.

Head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley enters her sixth season as head coach in 2014 with 71 victories at the helm of the UIC program. Schumacher-Cawley earned a four-year contract last March and will be the Flames’ leader through 2017.

UIC returns eight players to the 2014 roster from last season. The Flames also added transfer Stephenee Yancy, who spent the last two seasons with Western Michigan. A 6-foot-2 middle blocker, Yancy put down 469 kills over 50 matches with the Broncos.

The Flames bring back a large senior class as Sara Sternard (763 career kills), Maggie Strus (1,250 career digs) and Molly McCoy (479 career kills) will be in their final seasons at UIC. Productive freshmen Kara Johnson (304 kills) and Casey Harris (73 total blocks) also return to the Flames’ lineup.

Over the summer, UIC will welcome three incoming freshmen in Angela Evans (Elkins Park, Pa.), Kyisha Hunt (Kankakee, Ill.) and Allison O’Reilly (Elgin, Ill.). Evans is a 6-foot-0 middle blocker, Hunt is a 5-foot-10 outside hitter and O'Reilly is a 5-foot-4 defensive specialist.
