Volleyball Inks A Trio Of Top Recruits
Feb. 14, 2000
Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's volleyball program inked a trio of recruits today as Lindsey Filkens, Teaha Shepperd and Dawn Strahanoski all signed National Letters of Intent.
Filkens, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter out of Downers Grove South High School in Downers Grove, Ill., headlines the newcomer group. A 1999 first team All-State honoree, she led the Mustangs to the Class AA state title last season, tabbing 10 kills in the championship game.
"Lindsey is a terrific volleyball player," Head Coach Don August said of his recruit. "Her strength is her hitting. She can hit all shots and knows when to slam it down and when to roll it over the top of a block. You will see her commit very few errors. She will be an immediate impact player on this team."
Shepperd is UIC's lone out-of-state recruit, hailing from Kalamazoo, Mich. The 5-foot-11 right side hitter played her prep volleyball at Galesburg Augusta High School in Galesburg, Mich.
"Teaha is a very versatile player," remarked August. "She hits the ball extremely hard and also handles it very well. She has a great volleyball I.Q."
Strahanoski comes to UIC as the tallest setter ever recruited by August, at 5-foot-11. She will rejoin former teammate, and 1999 MCC All-Newcomer Team honoree, Gina Caneva on the squad as both played at Lockport High School in Lockport, Ill.
"We are very high on her ability," said August. "She has great hands and can put the ball in position for the hitters to attack. She has a solid work ethic and will give us some versatility with her size at the setter position."
August also received a walk-on commitment from Jordan Studzinski, a teammate of Strahanoski's at Lockport.
The 2000 freshman class will join a veteran team with seven upperclassmen on the roster. The Flames will be looking to build on their third-place finish in the MCC last season and 17-15 overall record.
