MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The UIC volleyball team (14-15/7-10 Horizon) concluded its 2011 season with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-17) loss to Valparaiso in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship Friday inside the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee, Wis.

Junior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led all Flames players with 11 kills, while redshirt juniors Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) and Nicole Allgood (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) had 10 and nine kills, respectively. Aubrey Sniegowski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) chipped in eight kills.

The Flames went point for point with the Crusaders in the first set, before the Valparaiso squad went on five-point run to pull away to a 10-5 lead. UIC kept battling as Allgood spurred a three-point run with a kill, followed by a block with Dismuke. The run was capped off with a kill from Sniegowski to place the Flames within three points at 19-16.

Before the end of the set, UIC was within two points of the Crusaders, but Valparaiso closed out the set with a three-point run and a 25-21 score.

The Flames came out to an early 3-0 lead in the second set, including back-to-back kills from Allgood. Eventually, the Crusaders tied the set at eight, before notching a four-point run to overtake UIC with a 12-9 score. Further, Valparaiso improved to a five-point run (19-11) and the Flames were unable to recover and dropped the set in a 25-16 effort.

The Crusaders owned the first eight of nine points in the third set. Despite a UIC four-point run and coming within four points of Valparaiso, the squad fell 25-17 and saw their 2011 season come to a close.
