Macomb, Ill. - After battling back from a 2-1 deficit against Western Illinois, the University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team was unable to secure the non-conference victory, despite five players posting double-digit kills, as the host Westerwinds earned the 25-30, 30-24, 30-18, 27-30, 15-3 triumph over the visiting Flames at Western Hall on Tuesday night.
The Flames also received double-doubles from senior outside hitter Jordan Studzinski (10 kills, 19 digs), Katie Kozak (60 assists, 21 digs) and Katarina Nedeljkovic (13 kills, 13 digs). Studzinski's double-double marked her seventh in as many matches.
The Westerwinds were flawless in the final game as they finished with a hitting percentage of .462 (6 kills, 0 errors, 13 attacks). UIC was not as successful, ending with a woeful hitting percentage of .-300 (2 kills, 8 errors, 20 attacks).
Western Illinois' Amy Sauerwein posted a 20/20 double-double of 22 kills and 21 digs to pace the Westerwinds, followed by Kali Landis (15 kills, 25 digs) and Jenna Yurs (11 kills).
With the victory, Western Illinois improves to 10-15 overall, while the Flames drop to 9-18 on the campaign.
It was a defensive battle for both teams as there were 199 digs on the evening, with Western Illinois holding a 101-98 edge over the Flames. Western Illinois' Jennifer Alexander posted a match-high 31 digs for the Westerwinds, while UIC freshman libero Liz Hrebic tied a team-season high with 23 digs for the Flames.
UIC will be back in action on Friday night, for their home finale, as the Flames will host cross-town rival, Loyola, at 7:00 p.m. in the Flames Athletic Center.
