Volleyball Drops To First-Place Cleveland State, 3-1|
Oct. 26, 2012
CHICAGO -Sophomore Maggie Strus collected 32 digs Friday as the UIC volleyball team (14-12/6-4 Horizon League) was outlasted, 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19) by first-place Cleveland State inside the Flames Athletic Center. Strus' 32 dig feat places her fourth in the all-time record book for most digs in a single match.
Strus now holds both the first-place and fourth-place in that category as the captured 35 digs against Belmont on September 15 earlier this season.
Senior Nicole Allgood posted a double-double on the night as she hammered down 12 kills and earned 19 digs. Her 19-dig performance is a season-high.
Junior MaryKate Imrie also collected her 14th double-double during the 2012 campaign with 45 assists and 14 digs. Imrie currently is in third place in the Horizon League for the most double-double performances on the season.
Senior Kelsey Safranek had 12 kills as she and Allgood led the Flames in the category. Seniors Janise Dismuke and Aubrey Sniegowski also collected double-digit kills at 10 and 11, respectively. Dismuke led the squad in hitting percentage at .318.
The Vikings topped UIC in the opening set 25-14, before the Flames answered in the second frame with a 25-23 victory. Despite the surge in the second game, UIC was unable to defeat Cleveland State as the Ohio finished the match with back-to-back (25-21, 25-19) victories in the third and fourth frames.
The Flames return to the court Saturday at 4:00 p.m. (CT) as they play host to Youngstown State inside the Flames Athletic Center.
