    CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team (14-11/6-3 Horizon League) outplayed Chicago State in each category of play Tuesday inside the Flames Athletic Center as the Flames swept the Cougars, 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-19).

    Senior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led the Flames offensively as she collected eight kills on the night, while sophomore Sara Sternard (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) had eight in the match. Senior Nicole Allgood (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) hit at .357 with six kills.

    Junior MaryKate Imrie (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) led all players in assists with 23, while freshman Tracy Friel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) handed out five assists. Sophomore Maggie Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) earned 15 digs in the match to lead all players defensively.

    The Flames made quick work of Chicago State as they handled the Cougars 25-12 in the first set. The UIC team hit at .382 in the opening frame.

    Then with back-to-back victories (25-20 and 25-19) in the second and third sets, UIC secured the match at 3-0.

    The Flames return to action inside the Flames Athletic Center Friday against Cleveland State at 7:00 p.m. (CT), before contending Youngstown State Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
