CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (14-9/7-4 in the Horizon League) downed Loyola (4-16/1-10), 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-23) Saturday inside the Flames Athletic Center in Chicago, Ill. Redshirt junior middle hitter Nicole Allgood (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) had 13 kills at .345 in the victory.
Junior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) again led all players in kills with 16 (.256), while also picking up six digs. Redshirt junior Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) had seven kills at a clip of .308.
In the first set, the teams stayed fairly close in score until Dismuke knocked down back-to-back kills to improve the lead to four points. Safranek had a kill that spurred a four-point run and the UIC squad led the Ramblers 18-10, before winning the set 25-20 and capturing a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Flames came out with a three-point lead in the second set and Loyola tied the score at 15-15, but the Flames fought back as Allgood hammered down consecutive kills and Dismuke and sophomore Aubrey Sniegowski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) earned blocks to place the Flames ahead 22-18. UIC won 25-23 and were ahead 2-0 in the match.
Moving into the third set, Sniegowski had six kills for the Flames, she propelled the team into a four-point run to close out the set at 25-23 and conclude the match in a 3-0 decision.
The Flames return to action Friday in a match against Wright State at 6:00 p.m. (CT) inside C.J. McLin Gymnasium in Dayton, Ohio.
