Sept. 16, 2003
Chicago, Ill - The University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team made their bi-annual trip to Lincoln Park to square off with DePaul on Tuesday night.
The trip was a short one for the Flames, as the Blue Demons earned the 30-23, 30-14, 30-18, non-conference sweep over UIC at the DePaul Athletic Center.
DePaul senior outside hitter Janet Cotter led the way for the Blue Demons with a match-high 15 kills and 14 digs for a double-double, while teammates Lara Marks added 10 kills.
For the match, the Blue Demons hit at an amazing clip of .434 (52 kills, 9 errors, 99 attacks). In the last two games combined, DePaul committed two errors.
With the victory, DePaul improves to 5-5 overall while the Flames fall to 4-7 on the campaign.
It was a see-saw affair in the first game, as both teams battled to a 14-all tie. DePaul, however, behind the strength of three kills and a service ace by Cotter, jumped out to the 19-15 advantage over the Flames, a lead that the Blue Demons would not relinquish. DePaul also took advantage of miscues by the Flames as UIC committed six service errors as the Blue Demons claimed the 30-23 victory.
Cotter led the way for DePaul in the game with six kills, while Marks added three.
The momentum continued for DePaul in the second game as the Blue Demons jumped out to an early 7-1 lead behind three kills from senior outside hitter Meg Griffin (6 kills) before UIC head coach Don August called time out.
The bleeding did not stop there as DePaul extended its advantage to 16-5 behind two kills and a block from Marks, which forced August to call his final time out of the game. The time-out was to no avail, as the Blue Demons went on a 14-9 run, marred by six consecutive errors by UIC, to clinch the 30-14 triumph. The Flames finished the game with a hitting percentage of -.167 (7 kills, 13 errors, 36 attacks), while DePaul hit at a near-flawless .536 (16 kills, 1 error, 28 errors).
Marks paced the Blue Demons attack with four kills, while Janet Goreham (5 kills) chipped in three.
In the third game, DePaul broke a 3-all tie with a 14-6 run, sparked by seven kills from Cotter to help clinch the sweep and the match for the Blue Demons.
Senior outside hitter Teaha Shepperd led UIC with 11 kills, while junior middle hitter Kristi Herrington added nine for the Flames.
UIC will be back in action on Friday afternoon as they will travel to South Carolina to square off with Charleston Southern in the first round of the Clemson Invitational at 3:30 p.m.
