MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The UIC volleyball team (5-7/0-0 HL) downed Alabama A&M (1-13) 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-17, 25-16) Friday inside the Elma Roane Fieldhouse in Memphis, Tenn. Sophomore Sara Sternard (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) hammered down a career-high 16 kills (.560) in the victory.
Not only did Sternard best her career-high in kills with 16, but also her total attempts with 25. The middle hitter's previous highs were 15 kills and 23 attempts, which were set in a victory over DePaul on Sept. 2, 2011.
Seniors Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) and Aubrey Sniegowski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) collected double-digit kills with 14, 13 and 11, respectively. It was the trio's second above-10 kill on the day. The Flames squad posted 65 kills to the Bulldogs' 40.
Junior setter MaryKate Imrie (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) dished out 53 assists, while the Alabama A&M squad handed out only 36 assists as a team.
UIC collected consecutive 25-17 victories in the first and third sets, while clinching the match in a 25-16 outcome in the fourth set to secure the victory.
The Flames concludes play at the Tiger Invitational Saturday as UIC faces Louisiana-Lafayette at 10:00 a.m. (CT), followed by Belmont at 2:00 p.m.
