UIC Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller over Marshall

CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team received double-doubles from senior MaryKate Imrie and freshman Kara Johnson on its way to a thrilling 3-2 victory (25-22, 26-28, 25-23, 21-25, 15-13) over Marshall Friday on the opening night of the UIC Invitational. The Flames held a 2-1 advantage, dropped the fourth set but hit .435 in the fifth and decisive set to seal the victory.
UIC (2-3) set season highs in attack percentage (.247), kills (76), assists (73) and total blocks (9.0). The Flames held the Thundering Herd (1-5) to a .239 overall attack percentage and only eight kills on 24 attempts in the fifth set.
Imrie tied her career high with 65 assists and recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 digs. The Orland Park, Ill. native dished out 16 assists in the second set alone and assisted on 11 of UIC's 13 kills in the final set. Imrie also collected two service aces and now owns six on the season.
Johnson finished with a match-high 20 kills on 63 attempts. The 20 kills are a season-high for all Flames players and bests Johnson's previous high of 17 against Navy (Aug. 31). Johnson put down three kills on six attempts in the final set. The Champaign, Ill. native also tallied 13 digs for her second double-double of the season. Her first double-double came against Navy on Aug. 31 when she had 17 kills and 12 digs.
Junior defensive specialist Maggie Strus led the Flames with 22 digs and also dished out six assists. The 22 digs are a season-high for any Flames player. Strus tallied eight of her 22 digs in the fourth set.
Junior Molly McCoy set a new career-high with 19 kills on 35 attempts for a stellar .429 attack percentage. Her previous best of 17 kills came on Sept. 21, 2012 against Valparaiso. McCoy put down seven kills on just 11 attempts in the third set victory and led UIC with four kills on six attempts in the final set.
Freshman Melissa Nava and junior Sara Sternard both put down 14 kills for the Flames. Nava took 27 swings and committed only three errors for a strong .407 attack percentage. Meanwhile, Sternard led UIC with six kills on nine attempts in the long second set. Sternard also tied her season-high with four total blocks.
The Flames conclude play at the UIC Invitational Saturday. Action gets underway at 10 a.m. with Denver vs. Marshall and UIC takes on Chicago State at Noon. Marshall and Chicago State play at 5 p.m. and the Flames close out the weekend with a 7 p.m. matchup with Denver.
