Chicago, Ill. - For the third straight match, the University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team connected for a hitting percentage of over .300 as the Flames earned the 30-15, 30-24, 30-14 victory over Buffalo on the opening day of the Quality Inn Downtown/UIC Invitational at the UIC Pavilion on Friday night.
With the victory, UIC improves to 4-1 on the campaign, while Buffalo falls to 2-3.
UIC finished the contest with a hitting percentage of .324, led by 11 kills apiece from senior middle hitter Gina Caneva (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and junior outside hitter Lindsey Filkins (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South).
The Flames also received an impressive performance from junior outside hitter Teaha Shepperd (Kalamazoo, Mich./Galesburg-Augusta). Shepperd finished the contest with 10 kills and a team-high 10 digs.
UIC head coach Don August had a good feeling about his squad entering the tournament after capturing the Sam Houston Invitational last weekend.
"We thought we had a pretty good week of practice leading up to this," August said. "Each practice got better during the week so the girls were focused and ready for tonight."
UIC will be back in action on Saturday with a contest against Binghamton at 1:30 p.m., followed by a nightcap against Iowa at 7:30 p.m.
