Memphis, Tenn. - Few could blame the University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team if they were a little worse for wear for their contest against Memphis in their final match of the Memphis Invitational. After all, the Flames had competed in three matches over the span of two days, including a heart-breaking five-game loss at the hands of Alabama A&M earlier on Saturday afternoon. The host Tigers took advantage of UIC on Saturday night and came away with the 30-20, 30-27, 30-22, three-game sweep over the Flames at Elma Roane Fieldhouse to claim the tournament championship. Overall, the Flames finished third, behind Memphis (4-0), Alabama A&M (3-1) and in front of Delaware State (1-3) and Tennessee State (0-4). With the victory, Memphis remains undefeated at 4-0, while the Flames drop to 2-3 overall. Memphis' Tiara Gilkey led the Tigers with 13 kills, while teammate Melissa Nance chipped in 12 kills. Together the duo combined for a hitting percentage of .526 (25 kills, 5 errors, 38 attacks). The Flames were plagued with errors as they committed 21 attack errors and 10 service errors on the evening. Middle hitters Ambria Springer and Megan Hoffman led the Flames with six kills apiece. Following the match, both Springer and senior outside hitter Jordan Studzinski were named to the All-Tournament team. UIC will be back in action on Tuesday evening, as they will travel to DeKalb, Ill., to take on the Northern Illinois Huskies at 7:00 p.m.
