Flames Conclude Play At The Naval Academy|

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Junior Sara Sternard led UIC with 12 kills a .318 hitting percentage and was named to the all-tournament team Saturday at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational. UIC fell short to UNC Wilmington in a 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 24-26, 25-21) decision inside the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis, Md.
Sophomore Melissa Nava also had 12 kills in the match, while junior Molly McCoy chipped in with 10. Senior setter MaryKate Imrie dished out 42 helpers and senior Justine Garcia earned 11 digs. Freshman Kara Johnson had eight kills and 11 digs.
The team compiled 47 kills at an attack percentage of .101.
The Flames dropped 25-21 and 25-16 in the opening two games of the match, before battling to a 26-24 victory in the third set to place the score at 2-1.
In the third game the Flames ignited a few short runs, including a three point run that featured a kill by Nava, followed by a service ace by Johnson and another kill by Sternard to pull the Flames ahead to a 7-5 advantage. UIC then closed out the game by earning three-straight points as McCoy had a kill, redshirt junior Maggie Strus had a service ace and due to an attack error by UNC Wilmington, the Flames captured the set 26-24.
With the match score 2-1, UNC Wilmington was able to pull away to a 3-2 victory as the team sealed the final game in a 25-21 decision.
UIC returns to action Thursday against TCU in its home opener at 5:00 p.m. (CT) inside the Flames Athletic Center. The Flames will then hold their home tournament on Friday and Saturday.
