Huntsville, Tex. - It may have been the second match of the season for the University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team, but Friday night's match against Sam Houston State certainly had a playoff atmosphere.

The Flames, however, were not up to the task as the Bearkats picked up the 32-34, 30-26, 32-30, 31-29 victory at the Sam Houston Invitational at the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

Junior Teaha Shepperd led the way for the Flames with 19 kills, while teammates Lara Clarkson (19 digs), Gina Caneva and Lindsey Filkins (13 digs) each chipped in 16 kills. Junior setter Meghan Keck dished out 68 assists on the night.

UIC head coach Don August lauded the effort of his squad, but Sam Houston State made the plays when they needed to as they recorded 81 digs and 16 blocks on the night.

"This morning we were very relaxed (against Sacramento State)," August said. "We were just real tight tonight and we weren't as sharp.

"We hit some good shots tonight, but Sam Houston State made the plays when they needed to."

Carrie Sartain topped Sam Houston State with 22 kills, while teammates Liz Dahlstrom and Dana Jefferson added 11 kills apiece.

UIC will return to action on Saturday, as they will take on Birmingham Southern at 9:00 a.m.
