Chicago, Ill. - The University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team ushered in the old and the new on Saturday night, welcoming both new Head Coach Nancy Mueller and players from years past for an Alumni Match. Mueller and her troops were victorious, as they earned the 30-20, 30-27, 30-18 victory over the UIC Volleyball Alumni team at the Flames Athletic Center. The first-year head coach left Saturday, impressed with her team's performance. "Kristi Herrington had a good match, and Katie Kozak did a good job running the offense for us," Mueller said. "I thought Jordan Studzinski had a really nice match. "I don't think we really had any bad performances tonight," Mueller continued. "I thought it was a good team performance." "This was a good match for us to get the butterflies out and get ready to play for the regular season." Mueller organized this match, not only to get her players ready for the regular season, but to establish a healthy relationship with the alumni. "I think it's really important that they know who I am and where I'm going to take this program," Mueller said. "We can't turn towards the future without bringing the past along. "I think that it's important that our players know where the (alumni) comes from and how they built the foundation for the program," Mueller said. "We want the alumni to know that we're going to give them something to be proud of." Mueller was impressed with the way the alumni squad, comprised of Gina Caneva, Lara Clarkson, Lynn Clarkson, Lindsey Filkins, Kim Forster and Laura Witteman performed together on such short notice. "There's some pretty good players that went through this program," Mueller said. "It was good to see that they gave us a challenge. "I was very impressed with what they threw at us." UIC will open the season on Wednesday night, as they will host the Western Michigan Broncos at 7:00 p.m. in the Flames Athletic Center.
