Flames Capture Second-Place in Chicagoland Challenge With Sweep Over DePaul

Chicago, Ill. - Posting a triple-double and receiving all-tournament honors, senior Katie Kozak paced the UIC volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over DePaul in the final match of the Chicagoland Challenge Saturday night. With a 2-1 record, the Flames captured second-place behind 2007 Horizon League member Valparaiso.
In addition to Kozaks triple-double with 11 kills, 43 assists and 11 digs, the setter also led UIC with four service aces. Senior Ambria Springer joined her teammate on the all-tournament team after totaling 46 kills, 20 digs and 17 blocks in three matches.
UIC cruised by DePaul in game one (30-18) after the Flames held DePaul to a .020 attack percentage, while posting a .404 hitting percentage as a team.
The Blue Demons answered on offense early in game two to take the 13-9 advantage, but the Flames fought back with an 8-4 run to knot it up at 17-17. The two teams exchanged points eventually tying it up at 31-31 before Ashley Martin and Nedeljkovic's consecutive kills closed out the game (33-31).
With five service aces and 25 kills, the Flames clinched the match with a ten-point victory (30-20) over DePaul in game three.
UIC faces Northwestern on the road on Tuesday, August 29, before heading to Tampa, Florida for the USF Tournament, Sept. 1-2.
