CHICAGO – The UIC men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday, Nov. 9, hosted by Missouri State (MSU) in Springfield, Mo.  The women’s 6K race is scheduled to begin at noon CT with the men’s 10K competition set for 1:15 p.m.  The MSU Cross Country course will field 65 combined programs and more than 600 student-athletes in the two races with the top two squads and four fastest individuals advancing to the national meet on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.

“My goal is to beat some of those ranked teams,” said head coach Jim Knoedel.  “We’ve been working very hard and I think our runners are ready for the longer races.

Both Flames’ squads are coming off an impressive performance at the 2012 Horizon League Championships which yielded runner-up honors for each team.  It was the women’s highest conference finish in program history and the best men’s finish since 2006.

Freshman Pat Niyork took home Horizon League Newcomer of the Year laurels as he placed seventh overall and earned a spot on the all-league first team.  He was joined by junior Angelos Karkalis who finished sixth overall, just two seconds ahead of Niyork to lead the men’s team.  Freshman Marcus Garcia also picked up conference hardware as he earned second team accolades with an 11th place showing.

Sophomore Tess Ehrhardt paced the women’s squad and took home sixth-place honors, earning first-team all-league.  Three runners represented UIC on the second team in freshman Emma Preston (ninth), Rebecca Zaiter (10th) and Lauren Lindholm (12th).

Information on Friday’s meet can be viewed on Missouri State’s website and results will be displayed on after the competition.
