Nov. 5, 2013
CHICAGO—UIC women’s cross country runner Tess Ehrhardt and soccer player Josh Beard have both been selected as the Illinois National Guard UIC Flames Student-Athletes of the Week for the period Oct.28-Nov.3. Both players have been honored this week by the Horizon League as Ehrhardt was named Women’s Athlete of the Year, and Beard was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Ehrhardt helped her team place second out of nine teams at the Horizon League Championships over the weekend. The junior came in first place among 74 runners in the 5k with a time of 17:47.63. Her performance at the championship enabled her to be the first conference champ in cross country at UIC. She also ends her season with the honors of being a part of the Women’s All-League First Team.
This is Ehrhardt’s second time being honored as the Illinois National Guard Student-Athlete of the Week for the season.
Beard scored the game-winning goal against Oakland to help his team clinch the Horizon League regular season title. Over the last two games, the red-shirt senior has recorded two points off his goal, while taking three shots with one SOG. He is now one of only six players on the team that has three or more goals on the season. He has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week and was also named College Sports Madness Horizon Player of the Week.
This marks Beard’s first time being honored as the Illinois National Guard Student-Athlete of the Week, but the fifth soccer player on the season.
The women’s cross-country team will take a week off from competition as they prepare for the NCAA Midwest Regional, which will take place in Ames, Iowa on Nov. 15. The men’s soccer team will be back on the field this weekend as they host Green Bay at Flames Field at 1 p.m. (CT). This will be the Flames’ last regular-season match-up and will also be Senior Day.
