CHICAGO- After an impressive first-place finish at the College of DuPage Invitational last weekend, the UIC cross country teams will travel to South Bend, Ind., Friday, Oct. 4, to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational. The women’s squad will be competing in the 5K gold race beginning at 1:00 p.m. CT., directly followed by the men’s five-mile gold race set to start at 1:45 p.m.
“I enjoy a big meet like the ND Invitational because it teaches us how to handle tough competition and respond in a positive manner,” said head coach Jim Knoedel. “We learned from last week's race that if we start together as a team, running in a swarm and giving each
The last time the Flames participated in the Notre Dame Invitational in 2011, junior Tess Ehrhardt was a first-year student and piloted her team to a 17th-place finish with a time of 18:43. Last week, Ehrhardt placed first at the College of DuPage Invite allowing for her first Horizon League Runner of the Week honor and Illinois National Guard Student-Athlete of the Week accolade.
In 2011, the men’s squad took home 11th–place in the five-mile race at the Notre Dame Invitational with the help of senior Arash Darbandi. Last weekend, the men secured first-place at the COD Invite as senior Photis Karkalis (25:45.20) fronted the team, and earned the men’s Horizon League Runner of the Week title.
“We face three HL teams we have not seen yet so this will give us a good idea where we stand with the rest of the teams,” said Knoedel. “The HL meet will be on a similar type of course (flat and fast) so we can see if we have done the initial preparation we will need to be successful in one month.”
The Flames will be competing against conference rival’s Youngstown State, Valparaiso and UW-Green Bay in preparations for the Horizon League Championship on Nov. 2.
