Warrenville, Ill. – The UIC cross country teams concluded competition at the College of DuPage Invitational with both the men and women’s teams securing first-place.
“We demonstrated some good pack running on the women's side and used the strategy to sneak by UWM,” said head coach Jim Knoedel. “I knew it was going to be a good battle but we managed to slip by the Panthers.”
The men were led by senior Photis Karkalis in the 8K, placing third with a time of 25:45.2. He was closely followed by teammates Kyle Hauser and Arash Darbandi who placed fifth and 10th, with scores of 25:49.1 and 26:20.0, respectively.
“After being flat at our initial race of the year the guys turned over a new leaf and stunned some of the teams there,” said Knoedel. “Our guys raced like I knew they were capable, from the gun they showed a fire which helped us easily top conference rivals UWM and UWGB.”
On the women’s side, Tess Ehrhardt finished in first-place piloting the women in the 5K race, with a time of 18:11.7. Also contributing to the first-place finish, were Emma Preston and Lauren Lindholm, with times of 18:57.1 and 19:22.3, respectively.
“Tess was back early in the race helping her teammates but I could see the focus in her eyes so that even though she was behind at the two mile mark, I knew she was going to win,” said Knoedel.
The Flames return to action next Friday, Oct. 4 for the Notre Dame Invitational set to start at 2 p.m.
