CHICAGO- The Flames cross country program will travel to Normal Ill., Friday, Sep. 14 to compete against 30-plus teams in the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship.  UIC will be facing host school Illinois State, and most notably Illinois, North Central, Eastern Illinois, and Loyola.  All events are set to begin at 5 p.m. CT.

“I’ve been very pleased with what we've accomplished,” said head coach Jim Knoedel.  “We haven’t reached where I want to go but I think right now we are in very good shape.”

The women’s team is coming off a fourth-place finish in the NIU Invite last weekend led by freshman Emma Preston who placed 17th overall.  Friday, the women’s 5K race will begin at 5 p.m. CT.

“We seem to be suffering from an illness going around the team and we have two athletes that are recovering from injuries, so we won’t be running at 100%,” said Knoedel.  “But, I still think we should be in the top five this race regardless.”

The men took second place last weekend at the NIU invitational, with the help of Junior Angelos Karkalis earning fourth place in the 6K race.  The men will compete in an 8K race on Friday beginning directly after the women’s race at 5:45 p.m. CT.

“Last year our men placed third, and we should do at least that well this year,” said Knoedel.  “There is certainly a lot of competition on the men’s side, but I think we’ll surprise them with how close we are.”
