PALOS HILLS, Ill.- Flames runners won both the men's and women's race at the UIC Home Opener at Horsetail Lake Saturday, with Kristen Heckert taking the women's competition and Matt Morse winning the men's race.

"Matt had a great race," Flames head coach Jim Knoedel said. "I was very pleased with the individual efforts of Matt and Kristen."

UIC had three runners in the top ten in the women's contest, with Heckert taking top billing. The junior covered the two-mile course in 11:18.8. Freshman Hannah Reilly came in fifth place with a time of 12:11.0, while freshman Grace Millhorn took ninth with a 12:29.1.

"I was pleased with the efforts, but we didn't have a full team," Knoedel said. "I still hoped we would come out on top though."

For the Flames men, Morse crossed the finish line in 20:27.0, setting a new UIC Horsetail record. Morse bested the previous record of 20:41 set by Mikhail Davidyan. Five of the top 10 finishers were Flames in the men's race, with Sam Kehoe taking third (21:21.5), Roger Pinon taking fourth (21:23.8), Brian Denk taking sixth (21:26.9) and Tyler Hinckley coming in seventh (21:35.8).

"Our men had a great pack of runners," Knoedel said. "That bodes well for us in the future."

In the team competitions, the UIC men topped all four of their opponents, besting Chicago State, St. Xavier, Milwaukee and Green Bay. The women's squad came out on top against two of it's three opponents, beating Green Bay and Chicago State. Milwaukee edged the women's squad by three points.

Both squads head to the Titan Invitational hosted by the University of Detroit-Mercy next Saturday. The meet will give the Flames a preview of the course that will also host the Horizon League Championship later this season.
