ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The UIC men’s and women’s cross country teams opened up the 2014 season Saturday hosting the UIC Home Opener at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. The women’s squad earned first place in the 4K race, while the men finished the 6K event in second.

“Tess took control of the race with about 500 meters to go and opened up a huge gap for her victory,” cross country head coach Jim Knoedel said. “I wasn't surprised to see how strong she looked against some very good competition.”

The women finished with six of the top 10 spots as Tess Ehrhardt took home the top honor with a time of 15.45.5. Following her in third was Emma Preston (15:58.4) and Rebecca Zaiter in fourth (16:06.4). Also in the top 10 were Lauren Lindholm in sixth (16:26.0), Ellie Willging in eighth (16:32.8) and Brittany Schwarz in ninth (16:37.8).

“I was excited to see we had six of the top 10 finishers, but as good as we did I know there is still lots of room to improve,” Knoedel said.

On the men’s side, Kyle Hauser led the Flames taking home second place with a time of 19:58.0. Also in the top five, Alex Bashqawi earned fourth place with a time of (19:59.8). Finishing in the top 20 were Gunnar Sterne (11th), Lucas Beltran (12th), Brixton Rill (13th) and Zade Kurdieh (14th).

“Kyle Hauser ran a smart race and I was happy with the leadership he has provided the team,” Knoedel said. “Frosh Alex Bashqawi ran up front the whole race and contributed well to our success today.”

The Flames return to action on September 12 for the Illinois State Invitational in Normal, Ill. at 5 p.m. CT.
