CHICAGO – continues its coverage for the ‘Forty Flames to Follow’ summer series with distance standout Emma Preston.  The sophomore-to-be returns to a Flames’ cross country team that captured the runner-up title at the 2012 Horizon League Championships, the program’s highest-ever finish.

Preston picked up second-team All-Horizon League honors at the conference meet with a ninth-place showing, recording a time of 18:34 in the 5K race.  Earlier in the season, Preston notched a team-season best result of 18:17 in the 5K at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships, good enough for 18th place.  Throughout the season, she finished either first or second on six separated occasions among her UIC teammates.

Preston also had a very productive indoor season as she totaled five points for the Flames at the Horizon League Championships.  She placed sixth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:17.60 and notched fourth in the mile race with a result of 5:04.33, both season-best times.

The East Peoria, Ill., native continued her strong performances during the outdoor portion of 2013.  On April 20, at the Huskie Blue Demon Classic, Preston took home runner-up honors in the 1,500 m. run with a time of 4:43.84.  At the conference championships, Preston was the top-finishing Flame in the 5,000 m., crossing the line at 18:13.47 and earning seventh place.

The UIC cross country team will kick off the 2013 campaign with its annual home opener on Aug. 31 in Palos Heights, Ill.
