Women's Cross Country Signs Susana Martinez Of Chicago To National Letter Of Intent May 12, 2003
Chicago, Ill. - University of Illinois at Chicago head cross country coach Jim Knoedel recently announced the signing of Chicago native Susana Martinez to a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Flames starting this fall. Martinez, who will graduate from Maria High School in Chicago, will be a key component to a UIC squad that has the potential to be a factor in the Horizon League title race this coming fall. Martinez was a consistent contributor to the Maria distance running program throughout her career. Her best state finish came in 2001, when she finished 39th in the Class AA race in a time of 15:17, just missing all-state honors. "Susana has untapped potential," said Knoedel. "With competition, a team and coaching it will translate into fast times." "She is a phenomenal athlete."
The Flames will return their top-three runners from 2002, as standouts Jenni Goebel, Lizet Diaz and Sara Jeffers will pace UIC in the fall.
