CHICAGO, Ill. – The men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Youngstown, Ohio to partake in the 2014 Horizon League Outdoor Championships.  The three-day meet, hosted by Youngstown State, will commence at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, May 2 and extend until Sunday, May 4.

All events will be held at Farmers National Bank Field, with the discus throw, 10,000-meter run and javelin throw finals set to start action on Friday.

On Saturday, the Decathlon, shot put, long jump, pole vault and steeplechase are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

The final day of competition will get underway at 10:00 a.m. with the hammer throw, triple jump and high jump.  Directly following the first events of the day will be, the 4 x100, 1,500-meter run, 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter, 100-meter, 800-meter runs, 400-meter hurdles, 200-meter run, 5,000-meter run, and the 4x400 to complete competition.

“The team has really come on strong in the last two weeks and I feel we have a great shot at winning five or six events on the women's side and four or five on the men's,” said head coach Jim Knoedel.  “At this meet it’s not about the marks, its about the competition. The marks can be average as long as we are the team that comes out on top.”

Last season, both the men’s and women’s teams finished fifth overall.  Junior Rebecca Zaiter collected two second-place finishes in the 800-meter (2:11.90) and 1,500-meter (4:27.38) runs.  Teammates Richmond Richter (14.74 meters) and Seyi Ogunleye (14.12 meters) contributed solid performances in the triple jump, collecting a third and fifth place finish, respectively.

“Throughout the year I teach the team to focus on controlling what you have complete control over, and that is yourself,” said Knoedel.  “We can't control our opponents or the weather, but if we respond at the biggest meet of the year with the biggest effort, than I will be happy no matter what the outcome.”
