April 8, 2014
CHICAGO, Ill.- Freshman Ariel Gibbs was named Horizon League Athlete of the Week for the period of April 1-7, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Gibbs is awarded with her first career weekly accolade.
Gibbs competed at the University of Chicago Duals this past weekend, dominating the women’s squad in field events. She placed first among 14 other participants in the long jump recording a mark of 5.51 meters. This distance stands as a personal best and ranks as the second best jump in the league this season.
“Ariel has consistently been showing us that a personal record would happen and to do it in such cold conditions shows me she will jump even further,” said Head Coach Jim Knoedel.
Gibbs was also part of the women’s 4x100 meter relay, helping her team to a first-place finish.
Gibbs and the rest of the Flames track & field teams will resume competition on Friday as they travel to Romeoville, Ill., for the Chicagoland Championships.
