CHICAGO - Track and Field standout Rebecca Zaiter has been selected as the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of March 25 - 31 as announced by the athletic department on Wednesday morning. Zaiter dominated the 1,500 meters at the Raleigh Relays last Friday hosted by NC State, winning her section and breaking the UIC outdoor record.
"She is one of the smartest racers on the team," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "She puts herself in a good position and is ready to make a move when the moment arises. She was by herself for the last 400 meters at Raleigh and if someone were there to push her, I know she would've run even faster. She has the talent to qualify for NCAA West Regionals and we are going to focus on getting her there."
The sophomore broke the tape with time of 4:33.23, which bested the star-studded field by more than three-and-a-half seconds. The old program record was held by current teammate Jamie Johnson with a time of 4:36.41 set in May of 2012.
Zaiter becomes the first outdoor track and field student-athlete to garner the UICFlames.com award. Senior Andrea Crump earned the accolade during the indoor season on Jan. 16.
