Feb. 26, 2010
ANN ARBOR, Mich.- The UIC men's and women's track and field teams will be in Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend to participate in the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships. The competition will get underway on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. CT and continue through until Sunday.
UIC head coach Jim Knoedel feels that his teams are prepared and ready to do well at the conference meet. There are seven men's teams competing this weekend and eight women's teams in the field.
"Our goal for men's and women's is to be in the top half of the conference," said Knoedel. "We'd certainly like to be in the top three and it's going to take some real good efforts for us to get there."
On the women's side, Knoedel is looking for strong efforts from the throwers and relay teams.
"Our throwers need to do well. We've got four of the top female throwers in the conference. That's going to be a place where we'll get a big amount of points."
Monique Bostert and Kristen McMurray will be two Flames to keep an eye in those events this weekend. The weight throw will take place Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT, while the shot put finals will be on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. CT.
Aimee Schuh, Kellie Schuh, Toni Ogundare and Jaime Johnson will compose the 4 x 400 relay squad. In the distance medley relay, Aimee Schuh will be replaced by senior Mary Brennan on a squad that is the top ranked team in the conference heading into this weekend's competition.
For the men, newcomer Anthony Hollingsworth is expected to earn big points in the short sprints. He'll be competing in the 60 and 200 meter dashes.
The relay teams will also be looked upon to contribute this weekend. "We need two good relays from the men," said Knoedel. "There's no reason we can't grab one of the top two spots in both."
