CHICAGO, Ill. - The women’s track & field team will travel to Romeoville, Ill., to compete in the Dick-Pond Lewis Invitational that will commence on Friday, Jan. 17, at 4:30 p.m. CT.
“The athletes that competed last week at Grand Valley State will have a leg up on the group that is competing for the first time, but I know that by Feb. 1 everyone will be on equal footing and ready for career PR's,” said head coach Jim Knoedel.
Last weekend, the women began their season with strong performances from juniors Rebecca Zaiter and Tess Ehrhardt, both bringing home first place in their individual events. Zaiter won the 800-meter run finishing with a time of 2:16.38 and Ehrhardt took the title during the 3,000-meter run clocking in at 10:29.18.
“This past weekend we had good initial performances but we can't be complacent,” said Knoedel. “I expect everyone that competed last Friday to improve on their initial marks.”
On the men’s side, the Flames will be competing against the Marquette Golden Eagles and the Milwaukee Panthers during competition at the John Tierney Triangular, Friday, Jan. 17, which is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. CT.
During the 2013 Invite, senior Angelos Karkalis took home first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.18. Sophomore Marcus Garcia also had a standout performance whenhe won the 3,000-meter run, crossing the finish line at 9:19.26.
Additional contributors included, senior Matt Marzahl who took the high jump title with a height of 1.93 meters.
During last weekend’s competition, Seyi Ogunleye placed first in the triple jump leaping a distance of 13.94 meters. Ogunleye was crowed the Horizon League Indoor Athlete of the Week for the period of Jan.7-13.
“Too many athletes 'talk' about being good,” explained Knoedel. “Seyi does the work to be the best in the conference in the triple jump so he is confident because he puts in the necessary preparation.”
