Cross Country Looks Crisp At UW-Parkside Invitational

Kenosha, Wis.- At the same course that will host this year's Horizon League Cross Country Championships, the University of Illinois at Chicago cross country team put up a superb effort at the UW-Parkside Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside National Cross Country Course. The Flames placed sixth out of 15 teams in the men's 8000-meter event, downing Horizon League rival Loyola, who took 13th place. In the women's 5000-meter race, UIC took 10th out of 16 teams. For the second straight meet Sam Watson led the Flames with a 26:22, taking 28th in the 249-competitor event. Right behind Watson was the returning Mikhail Davidyan, who took 29th with a 26:25 in his first race since Sept. 10th. On the women's side, Susie Martinez continued her team-leading role this season with a 5K mark of 19:45, taking 41st out of 215 runners. Lisa Petty was close behind Martinez, turning in a 19:55 to take a solid 48th. The men looked strong as a team, with all six runners finishing within the top 55 competitors. Freshmen Jorge Flores and Joseph Mbari were especially strong, finishing next to each other as Flores came in 41st with a 26:47 while Mbari was 42nd by completing the course in 26:48. Jim Sulzberger finished in 27:29, while Jose Macias rounded out the nice overall performance with a 27:32. Kerry Brennan ran strong with a 20:24, finishing just ahead of teammate Rachel Covert, who turned in a 20:28 in her first event since the Bradley Invitational in early September after nursing an injury. Renee Koziol wrapped up the women's race for UIC with a 21:52. UIC will return to Kenosha in two weeks for the Horizon League Cross Country Championships on October 30th.
