Goebel Leads Cross Country At Notre Dame Invitational
Oct. 5, 2001
South Bend, Ind. - The UIC men's and women's cross country teams spent Friday afternoon competing at one of the Midwest's premier races, the Notre Dame Invitational. With runners spread across four different races, the Flames did not qualify for a team score on either side, but that did not mean the day was short on highlights. Sophomore Jenni Goebel, who sat out last Saturday's Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational, returned in strong form as she paced UIC with a third-place finish in the Gold Division 5K race. Goebel, whose third-place standing was her best this season, crossed the finish line in 18:09. Right behind Goebel was freshman Lizet Diaz, who finished a season-best seventh in 18:28. In the Men's Gold Division 8K, junior Joe Marren led the way, placing 51st in the 155-man race in 26:05. Junior Rich Daubert (26:52/88th) and freshman Mikhail Davidyan (27:21/113th) also competed in the gold division race for the Flames. Junior Jessica Streit gave UIC a fine finish in the Women's JV race on Friday, crossing the finish line in 19:55 for 19th place. Freshman Sara Jeffers also competed in the event, taking 32nd in 20:47. Sophomore Tristan Roche was the lone men's entrant in the JV race and placed 47th in 27:16.
Both squads will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 13, as they run in their final tune up before the league meet at the UW-Parkside Invitational.
