University of Illinois at Chicago cross country coach Jim Knoedel experienced a wide array of emotions at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Saturday.

Freshman Jenni Goebel opened the 3.78 women's race with a 18th place finish of 22:22.

"Jenni ran a great race," Knoedel said. "She only finished nine places behind last year's Midwestern Collegiate Conference champion Alana Chrisman (Loyola).

"It seems like she gets better as the races get bigger."

Monieka Thompson finished in 178th place with a finish of 25:10 followed by Jessica Streit (228th, 25:39).

Knoedel's excitement for Goebel quickly turned to dismay as the men's team finished in 17th place (446 points).

"This was the worst performance that I have seen in my 21 years of coaching," Knoedel said.

Rich Daubert paced the Flames with a 53rd place finish of 26:37. Brian Brady was second for UIC with a 81st place finish of 27:06 followed by Joe Marren (83rd, 27:10), Russ Riberto (91st, 27:16), Tristan Roche (138th, 27:44), John Simon (146th, 27:49), Danny Smith (168th, 28:04), Shawn Sullivan (28:19), Lee Foss (28:37), Chris Stanley (29:02) and Don Taylor (29:35).
