Cross Country Concludes Action at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational|
Sept. 29, 2012
CHICAGO - On a picturesque afternoon along Lake Michigan at Montrose Harbor, the UIC men's and women's cross country team competed in the 40th annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Horizon League-foe Loyola. Freshman Pat Niyork and sophomore Rebecca Zaiter were the first Flames across the finish line in their respective races as the men ran an 8K and the women participated in the 5K.
"We struggled a little bit today," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "Our team has a few injuries right now so we didn't have a lot of room for error. We'll refocus this week during practice and continue to prepare for the Horizon League Championships at the end of October."
Niyork placed 51st as an individual out of 456 male runners with a time of 26:05. He has now led the Flames in two consecutive races, placing eighth overall at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships on Sept. 14. Freshman Marcus Garcia trailed Niyork by 50 seconds, crossing the tape at 26:55 good enough for 115th place. Coming in third for UIC was sophomore Kosta Papazoglou (177th) with a result of 27:29 as freshman Carlitos Rangel (186th) posted a time of 27:36.
Zaiter was 100th out of 514 female runners with a season-best time of 19:06 to pilot the UIC women. She improved upon her most recent 5K time at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships by nearly one full minute. Following Zaiter was freshman Lauren Lindholm in 146th place with a time of 19:26. She was trailed by senior Jaime Johnson (166th) and junior Grace Millhorn (168th) who finished at 19:37 and 19:40, respectively.
The Flames return to action next Saturday, Oct. 6 at the UW-Parkside Invite in Kenosha, Wis., which will serve as the Horizon League Championships course on Oct. 27.
