Sept. 14, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - The UIC men's and women's cross country team concluded action at the 2012 Illinois Intercollegiate Championships on Friday night at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill. The men placed eighth among 36 collegiate programs, while the women came in 11th place among 30 programs. Piloting both squads were freshmen Pat Niyork, Billy Clink, Emma Preston and Lauren Lindholm.
"Our freshmen did a great job tonight," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "Everyone trained very hard last week, and so I think some runners went into the race with slight fatigue. I know both teams can do better, so we will have to redouble our efforts to come home with a better overall performance."
Niyork garnered an eight-place finish in the 8K University Division race with a time of 25:03 as Clink wasn't far behind in 10th place with a result of 25:12. Following the newcomers, were juniors Angelos Karkalis (25:24) and Photis Karkalis (25:53), crossing the line in 17th and 27th place, respectively. Freshman Marcus Garcia was the fifth Flame to cross the tape as he posted a time of 26:30 and 39th-place finish.
Preston came across the line in 18th place with a time of 18:17 in the 5K University Division race as Lindholm placed 41st overall, clocking a time of 19:10. Senior Grace Millhorn trailed Lindholm by just nine seconds in 50th place with a result of 19:19, while freshman Stephanie Sanders notched 55th overall with a time of 19:29.
The Flames return to the course on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational with a scheduled start time of 11:15 a.m. CT.
