Sept. 4, 2004
Palos Park, Ill.- The University of Illinois at Chicago men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2004 season on Saturday, putting up a solid performance on a humid day at the 8th Annual UIC Home Opener at Horse Tail Lake in Palos Park, Ill.
The Flames almost finished the day undefeated in men's team scoring, downing Horizon League foe UW-Milwaukee, Chicago State, and St. Xavier while dropping to a tough University of Chicago squad. The UIC women chalked up a win over Chicago State while falling to the University of Chicago and the conference-rival Panthers.
The men's team was paced by Mikhail Davidyan, who turned in a strong second-place time of 21:17 in the men's 4.1-mile event. Davidyan's team-best finish at the meet marked the second year in a row that the Skokie, Ill., native led the Flames at the UIC Home Opener.
Second-year standout Jim Sulzberger also looked impressive, racing to the finish line in a time of 21:30 for fifth place. Fellow sophomore Sam Watson was right behind Sulzberger at 21:30 for a seventh-place rank, giving UIC three Top Ten finishers.
Bob Dron and Jose Macias took 15th and 16th, respectively, while newcomer Jorge Flores wrapped up the men's scoring for UIC with a 19th-place finish.
For the women's team, Susie Martinez led the UIC charge at the opener for the second consecutive season as the sophomore posted a tenth-place mark of 12:22. Sophomore Lisa Petty was right behind Martinez at 12:23, and Rachel Covert came in with a 13:02 finish in the two-mile race.
Saturday's opener marked the collegiate debuts of Kerry Brennan and Julie Cain. Brennan took 14th with a time of 12:40, while Cain followed with a 14:18.
The UIC cross country teams return to action this Friday, September 10th when the Flames travel to Peoria, Ill., for the Bradley Open beginning at 5:00 p.m.
