Palos Park, Ill. - University of Illinois at Chicago freshman Susie Martinez made her collegiate cross country debut one to remember on Saturday morning as she out-sprinted a pack of runners to finish first at the 7th Annual UIC Home Opener at Horsetail Lake.
Martinez, who was one of five Flames to finish in the top-10, completed the 2-mile course in 11:41, just edging out Amanda Domich of Horizon League rival Loyola (11:42).
Senior, and three-time all-league performer, Jenni Goebel was UIC's next highest finisher in sixth place (11:54) while newcomers Andrea Dennison, Lisa Petty and Rachel Covert rounded out the top-10 for the Flames.
UIC's strong showing helped them best the women's squads from UW-Milwaukee, Chicago State and St. Francis while finishing behind only the Ramblers, whose top-five runners finished 2-6. DePaul competed at the meet, but did not qualify for a team score.
On the men's side, junior Mikhail Davidyan (8th/21:13), and rookies Jose Macias (14th/21:33) and Jim Sulzberger (15th/21:34) all cracked the top-15 in the 4.1-mile race that saw Loyola place the top seven finishers en route to top honors.
Freshman Billy Poole-Harris (17th/21:41) and junior Brian Roth (19th/21:52) rouned out the men's top-five, helping the Flames finish ahead of the other two squad's competing, UW-Milwaukee and Chicago State. DePaul, which had two entrants in the race did not qualify for a team score.
Both the UIC men's and women's cross country squads will be back in action on Friday, September 12th, as the travel to Peoria, Ill., to compete in the Bradley Open.
